  4. What is !Widget?
  5.  
  6. This short app consists of the MakeRFS application, by Adam Goodfellow, and
  7. a collection of !Run and !Sprites files to construct a new module called
  8. 'NewMessages', which will be linked into the Resources filing system (ie.
  9. the apps, templates, etc in ROM).
  10.  
  11. This allows you to change the default templates, sprites, messages, apps,
  12. etc, and replace / add your own.

  15. Instructions for use
  16. ====================

  18. Just double click on !WidgApp, and it will open up a filer window, showing
  19. !Widgit and a directory called 'RFS'. Just add the files you want to 'RFS',
  20. in either 'Apps' or 'Resources', in the same directories that exist in ROM,
  21. and when finished, double click on !Widgit to make the new module.

  23. Then simply load this module in your !Boot file, so that it is loaded before
  24. entering the desktop, after starting your machine. Hey presto! New messages,
  25. apps, etc....

  28. (The sprite 'shuttext' should be *iconsprited sometime before shutting down,
  29. if you wish to use the new template when shutting down.)

  31. You may wish to change the file 'RFS.Resources.Desktop.Messages' first, as
  32. it contains my (personalised) start-up messages. I've used PRE: in the
  33. messages file for security purposes, with my name and e-mail address, in
  34. case my machine happens to get stolen.

  42. MakeRFS was written by Adam Goodfellow and is in the Public Domain, and can
  43. be found on Bulletin Boards, eg. Arcade.

  45. Exist - is Adam Goodfellow's too.  (Are you sure about that, me old china? 
  46. There's a copyright message inside "Exist" saying it belongs to Alan Glover,
  47. the Acorn man himself.   - The Doctor)

  49. !WidgApp and !Widgit, were written by someone at 'The Data Store', who said
  50. I could have a copy, at this year's Acorn User show. I would think they are
  51. in the Public Domain, as he was giving copies to other people too, and they
  52. only constitute !Run files, and !Sprites. (Hardly an app!)

  54. 3d window sprites, I don't know who designed them, but I like them! And they
  55. actually work, compared to !SetIcons, on v3.10. There are versions for both
  56. 'HiRes' and 'LoRes' modes.

  58. 3d Templates, were done by me and Michael Sanders (mrs2@ukc.ac.uk), spending
  59. .... er, at least an hour using FormEd ;-)  Ok, so they still need a bit of
  60. improving - I'll leave that up to you. Delete them if you like! (I think
  61. some of the 'Cancel' icons are too small.)

  63. There's also a new 'app' in Resources:$.Apps, called !Modules, which will
  64. open System:modules. I've also got other 'links' like this to other apps.

  88. This is V2!

  90. When I received this app from the DataFile it didn't work.  This is because
  91. at some time in its life it was copied over onto an IBM format disc, which
  92. not only converted all the filenames into uppercase chars (yukky) but also
  93. truncated them, meaning that "Resources" became "RESOURCE", "ADFSfiler"
  94. became "ADFSFILE" & "Templates" became "TEMPLATE" etc.

  96. Do I really have to say that in this version those have been renamed?

  98. Or that I've added new tool icons?  These tool icons were designed by
  99. Commander AjC (Andrew Clover) of Doggysoft. (You amazing dude you!  I wish I
  100. was you!)  And they're totally spanky-smart.  Also hi-res & lo-res types.

  102. Each modification uses up RMA space, so I've resisted the temptation to
  103. fiddle too much.

  105. And don't forget that bit about loading before the desktop starts...

  107. If you *really* want to tart up your desktop, I'd advise you get hold of a
  108. copy of !NewerLook from Doogysoft, er, Doggysoft, and !Desktop+ by Mike
  109. Rozdoba.  Both of these are in the DataFile library.
